Dexter, premiering in 2006, is a show following the character 'Dexter Morgan', a man who due to a traumatic childhood trauma, grew the urge to kill. The story follows Dexter, age 35 Working as a Blood Spatter Analysist for Miami Metro Police alongside his foster Sister Debra by day, but by night he becomes a vigilante serial killer, taking out those that the justice system misses out on. Across its 8 seasons we see 'Dexter' captivate audiences with its unique premise and moral ambiguity and makes us as views ask ourselves is Dexter Morgan just in what he is doing?

The character of Dexter Morgan is a man who, due to witnessing his biological mother being murdered in front of him as a child, developed psychopathic tendencies, which resulted in him having very little emotion, especially towards the beginning of the show as well as violent urges, with the need to kill. 

Despite this, Dexter does show a form of loyalty and affection for his adoptive sister Debra, as well as later his partner Rita Bennet and her children as well as his Son Harrison, the only person that lived through the same trauma as he had, being 'Born in Blood'.

What gives Dexter its horror aspect?

There are 3 main horror themes in Dexter;

-The dark themes of morality, and Dexter's internal struggle with his so called 'Dark Passenger' 

-The extreme Graphic violence, prevalence of blood and brutal murder scenes, watching as the victims of Dexter are subdued and killed in his ritual before being dismembered.

-The constant suspense and tension as Dexter attempts to remain undiscovered by both the authorities he works alongside by day, as well as the threat others who put his family and friends at risk. 

Dexter has firmly cemented itself as one of my favourite shows, best watched around this Halloween leadup.

My next blog post coming in the following week or so will cover the show 'You' on Netflix, a show with the lead Character 'Joe Goldberg' clearly showing inspirations from the character of Dexter Morgan, but I will leave that for my next post before diving any further.
