'You'
You 2018-2013
You, premiering in 2018, is a psychological thriller that follows the bookstore manager 'Joe Goldberg', a man who becomes dangerously obsessed the woman he falls for. The show begins with Joe at work, when Guinevere Beck, an aspiring writer who becomes his infatuation. The show explores themes of obsession, stalking as well as shows us how Joe justifies his actions in his own twisted mind.
Across the 4 seasons currently available, 'You' changes up the scenery, with the first season taking place in NYC, followed by season 2 and 3 in LA and San Francisco, across the county in California and then over to the UK, to London. Joe, each time having to move due to his own actions and to avoid detection.
Throughout the series the viewers get brief glimpses into Joe's past, finding out the roots of his darkness.
Growing up in an abusive household, with Joe's father frequently beating his mother due to his mothers cheating, eventually leading to Joe using a gun he finds inside his mothers closet to shoot and kill his father. This then lead to Joe's mother leaving him in a group home where he was relentlessly bullied and abused. Joe, years later tracks his mother down just to see that she had began a new life with another man and child.
Joe, similar to Dexter (see previous blog post), Joe has violent tendencies, driven by his obsessive and delusional pursuit of love or to protect his romantic tendencies. This is in stark contrast to Dexter, who ensures each of his victims fit a code that dictates he can only kill those who are guilty of heinous crimes and escaped the justice system.
Joe, again similar to Dexter, has a type of 'kill ritual', which involves him locking his victims inside a clear, soundproof tempered glass box, that he refers to as 'the Cage'. Joe on numerous occasions uses 'the cage' to prevent his lovers from getting away from him, keeping them locked up whilst he tries to explain his delusions of why he has done such violent acts.
Whilst watching 'You', you never know what's going to happen next, with sudden and brutal violence catching viewers off guard. This, alongside witnessing the levels that Joe will go for those he becomes obsessed about gives a high level of creepiness and horror.
There has never been been a better time to jump into this show, with the fifth and final season just around the corner, arriving on Netflix in December.
